Baby Steps

I've started my first guitar build today. It's actually only a partial build. I bought a cheapie Kramer Baretta clone a couple years ago, and although the neck felt pretty good, the body was routed so poorly that it's essentially unusable. So, I'm going to build a replacement body, modify the headstock slightly , and re-use all the hardware that came with the guitar. It isn't the be-all end-all custom build, by any means, but it's meant only to be a learning experience. Eventually, I'm going to build a Les Paul Custom, but we'll start with a replacement body for now.

So on with the show!!

Here's the wood that's going to be my Kramer Klone:

Yup, that's right, it's a 2x12, actual species unknown. This first attempt at a body is going to be for practice, and I don't have any illusions that it'll be professional quality, but it's my go at it. So, I don't really care if the wood is generally unsuitable for a guitar build. It's all about *my* technique at this point, not the wood itself.

No pics of cutting a couple chunks off the end of the board, ripping the pieces with the table saw, or gluing the resultant pieces together. We'll start with bandsawing the body out:

Here's the first rough draft. As you can tell I screwed up pretty badly inside the lower horn, but since I'm not worried about making an exact replica, I'll just scoop that out a little deeper when I clean up the outline tomorrow.

This year we began a new tradition in the Montgomery household.

Every year, on Independence Day (not, mind you, the Fourth of July, but INDEPENDENCE DAY), we will read the Declaration of Independence.

This year, I read it to Julia, "translating" some of the harder spots and pretty much skipping over the list of particulars against King George. As she gets older, though, we'll do the whole thing.

So here it is, in all its glory - The Declaration of Independence of the united States.

When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Tactics vs. Strategy

Tactics are how you win the battle. Strategy is how you win the war.

Yesterday, we suffered a tactical setback in court. In the end though, it's only tactical. The strategy, the long term goals and objectives, have not changed.

Julia's mother can score cheap points occasionally. We might not have a fully favorable court decision. That's okay, though. In the end, the question is whether Julia will have a solid, healthy relationship with Tera and me when she's 30...50...70. Will we have a loving, caring relationship with our as-yet unborn grandchildren?

When your strategy is sound, you can afford to lose a skirmish here or there.

A rare two-fer

For many of us, the arrival of Easter means the arrival of a new season of joy – of Easter parades, Easter egg hunts, chocolate bunnies, and sweet Peeps topping off a family meal. Some may wonder why we merrily celebrate at a time when we’re remembering Christ’s crucifixion on the cross. And there is something to that. Good Friday is, after all, about God who became Man, dying on the cross for our sins. And yet we celebrate Easter Sunday, and we are right to do so.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). This one verse sums up the miracle that is the Easter season and helps explain the celebration. Yes, Christ died for us, but in the end Easter isn’t a season of sadness. Ultimately, the story of Christ’s rising from the dead three days after the crucifixion is the story of the triumph of hope over despair.

Hope is one of America’s unique virtues. Hope makes us dream and achieve the seemingly impossible. It’s who we are, and it’s why we’re able to always believe that our best days are yet to come, both for our families and for our country. Easter time reminds us that we have every right to believe that this hope is based on time-tested truths and a solid foundation.

Christ Went To Hell........for me.

I don't often quote or cut and paste from other sources, but today I will.

Jesus, after He was crucified, went to Hell. For me.

This is from John Calvin's writings about the Apostle's Creed:

But we must seek a surer explanation, apart from the Creed, of Christ’s descent into hell. The explanation given to us in God’s Word is not only holy and pious, but also full of wonderful consolation. If Christ had died only a bodily death, it would have been ineffectual. No — it was expedient at the same time for him to undergo the severity of God’s vengeance, to appease his wrath and satisfy his just judgment. For this reason, he must also grapple hand to hand with the armies of hell and the dread of everlasting death. A little while ago we referred to the prophet’s statement that "the chastisement of our peace was laid upon him," "he was wounded for our transgressions" by the Father, "he was bruised for our infirmities" [Isaiah 53:5 p.]. By these words he means that Christ was put in place of evildoers as surety and pledge — submitting himself even as the accused — to bear and suffer all the punishments that they ought to have sustained. All — with this one exception: "He could not be held by the pangs of death" [Acts 2:24 p.]. Health Care Bill Outrage of the Day

Did you know that the recently passed health care reform bill contains a mandate that establishes the framework to eventually require all Americans to have a microchip implant?

But hey, don't take my word for it. Read it here in the bill:

You'll have to scroll down to around page 1000ish. It's Title V, Section C. Here's a synopsis:

(g)(1) The Secretary shall establish a national medical device registry (in this subsection referred to as the ‘registry’) to facilitate analysis of postmarket safety and outcomes data on each device that— ‘‘(A) is or has been used in or on a patient; ‘‘(B)and is— ‘‘(i) a class III device; or ‘‘(ii) a class II device that is implantable, life-supporting, or life-sustaining.”

(emphasis mine)

Now, just so you know, a Class II device, according to the FDA, is an implantable microchip. Again, don't take my word for it, read it here: FDA guidelines

"But," you say, "there's no requirement to actually GET a microchip, only a requirement to create a registry for them." Right you are.

But, microchip implants are pretty rare, outside the odd pacemaker. Why would Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid put a requirement for a national registry, complete with full compatability and information sharing, into the bill if they didn't see it becoming more widespread, and dare I say it, eventually required?

In response, I can only quote Sarah Palin. "Don't retreat. RELOAD!"

Rez was hugely influential on me as a teenager. I wore my Rez and Steve Taylor tapes flat OUT. I will always owe my brother Sherman, who I miss dearly, a debt of gratitude for introducing me to this band.

We're Asking The Wrong Questions

To date, I've refrained from posting anything about the ongoing health care debate, largely because I felt that I had little or nothing to add. It seems that the hundreds of thousands of gallons of ink spilled, and the billions of electrons sacrificed for the topic already have said all there is to say.

However, a thought occurred to me the other day that I've not heard anyone express on either side of the health care debate. It occurs to me that when it comes to the American health care system, we're asking the wrong questions.

The first question we should ask is this: "Where does the Constitution grant the Federal government authority to do *anything* about health care?" State governments can (and generally should) do whatever they like about the topic, but with the exception of insurance portability (being able to buy health insurance across state lines,) Federal government has no authority to be involved in health care. Of course, when the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, was asked that simple question, her answer was (and I quote), "Are you serious?" (Full story, with audio, can be found here.)

This brazen violation of the enumerated powers clause should be enough to kill any health care debate on the spot. Sadly, however, the Constitution poses no threat to our current form of government.

So, moving past the unconstitutionality of the whole thing, let's take this sentence, which everyone can agree on:

"Everyone should have affordable health care."

We can all agree on that. (Everyone should have ponies and unicorns, too, but that's another topic entirely.) Let's decipher that statement a bit, though. For the Left, "everyone" really means "everyone who falls outside our definition of 'rich' " and "affordable" is a code word for "free."

I would suggest that we begin asking the right questions, then, by asking this: who is ultimately responsible for an individual's health? By extension, who is ultimately responsible to pay for an individual's health care?

More will follow on this topic later. As a teaser, though, here's a little food for thought:

What is the minimum acceptable level of health care?

How much have programs like Medicaid and Medicare driven up insurance costs by removing literally millions of people from the insurance pool?

An American hero died today.

His name was A.T. He spent thirty-odd years in the Army, with tours in both Vietnam and Korea as an Armor officer.

There’s a legend among tankers (the spiritual descendents of the cavalrymen of old) about a place called Fiddler’s Green. Think of it as Valhalla for cavalry troopers.

Here’s the poem:

Congratulations, Senator Brown

Hearty congratulations to Scott Brown, the new Republican Senator-elect from Massachusetts. Yes, you read that right. Massachusetts.

What I find most interesting is that Brown's election is, IMHO, going to cause a civil war within the Democrat party. When a no-kidding conservative gets elected to the seat Teddy "The Swimmer" Kennedy, (aka The Hero of Chappaquiddick) held for damn near 50 years, you KNOW something big is afoot.

First, a little history.

The Democrat party has moved FAR to the left of where most Americans are comfortable. We're okay with center left (see: Bill Clinton) and center right (see: George W. Bush), but since this is a center-right country in which 60% of Americans consider themselves conservative,, we're far less comfortable with radical liberals than equally reactionary conservatives.

Nonetheless, in the 70s and 80s, the conservative movement conducted a purge. Gone were the Klan ties, the John Birch Society types, and with the notable exception of Pat Buchanan, gone were the rabid right-wingers clutching their worn copies of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. We kicked out the weirdos, the kooks, and the conspiracy theorists, deciding it was better to lose without them than to win with them.

The Democrats have never done this. Instead, they've embraced the farthest of far-left groups -- Communist Party USA, the National Man Boy Love Association (Kevin Jennings, President Obama's "Safe Schools Czar" is a acolyte of NAMBLA leader Harry Hay), the Earth Liberation Front (the #1 ecoterrorist group in the world), and the list goes on and on and on. Between Barack Obama (let's not forget that Obama's political career was launched in the home of domestic terrorist Bill Ayers), Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi, the farthest of the far left effectively took over the governance of the country.

The far-left liberals have now lost elections in New Jersey, Virginia, and Massa-freakin-chusetts. More moderate Democrats, led by the Blue Dog Coalition are faced with a stark choice: Either kick out the weirdo wing of the Democrat party and try to reclaim the center, or face another thirty years in the political wilderness. The nation has gotten its first real taste of the far-left since Carter thirty years ago, but the reaction is the same - spit it out as quickly as you can. The moderate Democrats understand this, and they understand that as weary as Americans were with President Bush, this is most assuredly NOT what they wanted.

Don't be surprised if, after the 2010 election, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are both out of a job. My money is on the still-halfway sane wing of the Democrat Party.

Driving in the Snow

I'm learning a lot about northern living, here in our little house on the tundra. One of the things I'm learning is how to drive on snow.

I have a Jeep, and that's great. But, the tires aren't exactly designed for snow. They're really sand dune tires - wide, designed to run at low PSI... the exact OPPOSITE of what you want in a snow tire.

But, since it's a Jeep, getting going is no problem. Stopping, on the other hand, can be interesting. It doesn't take much to make it slide. Next year I'll have a better set of narrow snow tires, and driving won't be *quite* the adventure that it is now.

Snow Day!!

Today at 6:30am, my boss called me and said that today's festivities had been cancelled due to the 8-10 inches of snow, low twenties temperatures, and sustained winds in the 25-30 mph range. That puts the wind chill into the single digits where frostbite can potentially set in within 30 minutes. Since it's going to continue snowing and being windy and blustery all day, it's a no-brainer. This is the first snow day I've had in over fifteen years.

Here's a few pictures from Forward Operating Base Montgomery, also known as our house. I took them from safely inside, mind you, though I did step outside for 30 minutes or so to scrape our driveway clean. Our neighbor with the industrial strength snow-blower cleaned the majority of the snow off of the driveways of all five houses in the cul-de-sac, including that of Mr. Harold, the gentleman in his early hundreds who lives two houses down.

I'm fairly certain that Mr. Harold was part of Nicolas Perrot's expedition team, but I haven't been able to confirm that.

One of the interesting things about my job at Franklin Roosevelt's big experiment in ignoring the Enumerated Powers Clause of the Constitution is that I get to deal with people from all walks of life. In a matter of minutes, I can be on the phone with a university bigwig with a huge salary, and then I can be helping someone who has had lifelong significant mental problems severe enough that they are considered disabled by SSA's rather strict guidelines.

The cases on the extreme are easy, but then there are the ones in the middle. They dwell in that grayish area between mental disorder and old-fashioned bad behavior. Of course, it is in the best interests of the medical and "social work" communities (though sadly, not society in general) to push the leaners towards mental disorder instead of bad behavior, so more and more people living in increasingly lighter shades of gray get pushed towards a finding of some sort of mental disorder.

As a case in point, a few weeks ago, I learned of a new disorder called "Oppositional Defiant Disorder." The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fact sheet on ODD lists the symptoms as follows:

Frequent temper tantrums
Excessive arguing with adults
Often questioning rules
Active defiance and refusal to comply with adult requests and rules
Deliberate attempts to annoy or upset people
Blaming others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior
Often being touchy or easily annoyed by others
Frequent anger and resentment
Mean and hateful talking when upset
Spiteful attitude and revenge seeking

In other words, they're kids. Shocking.

What I found really telling was the recommended treatment. In a list of some eight or ten treatments, the very first one listed was "Parent Management Training Programs to help parents and others manage the child’s behavior."

In other words, the most effective way to deal with your defiant, rude, and disrespectful child is to learn to be a decent parent.

Calling this "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" is like saying a puppy has "Indoor Incontinence Disorder." If the dog isn't housebroken, it ain't the dog's fault. Therefore, I submit to you, gentle reader, that this syndrome has been horrifically misnamed. Hereafter, it shall be referred to as follows:

"This Child Needs an Ass Whuppin' Disorder."

Admittedly, TCNaAWD doesn't roll off the tongue as easily as ODD, but it's far more accurate and identifies both the problem and its solution.

And that's life, from my oppositionally defiant position.

Today, President Obama made the following statement to Fox News:

"I think it is important, though, to recognize if we keep on adding to the debt, even in the midst of this recovery, that at some point, people could lose confidence in the U.S. economy in a way that could actually lead to a double-dip recession." (emphasis mine)

This is like an abusive husband saying that he recognizes that if he keeps beating his wife, she might be hurt worse than she already is.

Praise band rehearsal tonight

Tonight I have rehearsal with the praise band at our new church, GracePoint EPC.

I love playing with this band.

This is the first time in my entire life when I've been able to play at church without fear. I've always been cognizant that someone might be offended because they didn't like my guitar tone, or the volume, or the fact that it was an electric instead of an acoustic, or the song choice, etc.

It's such a completely different space to be in. I can just play, without worrying, without fear of offending, and just focus on worshipping.

I'm using my regular guitar rig - Custom Shop Les Paul into a PodXT Live, powered by a Crate Powerblock, run into a 2x12 cabinet with Celestion Classic Lead 80 speakers. The PodXT Live is a modeling amplifier, so I basically have about 50 or so virtual amplifiers, along with a ton of effects pedals, all in one box. For distorted sounds I primarily use a Marshall Silver Jubilee model (think Sweet Child O' Mine or Knockin' on Heaven's Door). For clean sounds I use a Fender Twin model. I've also got several acoustic patches on tap so I can instantly switch to make my guitar sound like an acoustic.

It's nice.

Waiting for the Snow

I’ve lived in the South my entire life, and in the Deep South for half of it. As a result, every day I check the weather forecast for the next ten to fifteen days. I’m in Wisconsin now, in the month of November, and therefore, to my mind, there should be several feet of snow on the ground. I should be sledding to work instead of driving. If I spit, it should be a solid chunk of ice before it hits the ground.

Instead, it was in the mid 60s yesterday. Sigh….this just isn’t right.

So, as I dig through the forecasts, I finally find one that has what I’m looking for. Accuweather.com says that it’s supposed to snow on the 24th of November. As much as I know I’ll be sick of snow by springtime, I’m looking forward to the first snow. With the notable exceptions of our visits to Wisconsin, I haven’t really seen snow since 2001.

Now, having said all this, I’m fully aware that by February or so, I’ll be pining for the little latitudes, “where the weather suits my clothes.” I’ll have “Boat Drinks” by Jimmy Buffet in constant rotation on my mp3 player.

But for now, I’m looking forward to the snow.

Having said that, I miss my friends.

The Oath never expires.

Sorry for no blog posts in the last couple weeks. I've been working (hallelujah!).

The job is interesting, and will be very, very challenging. My coworkers said it will take a minimum of three years just to reach basic competency. It's interesting to talk to such a wide range of people -- from the spry 81 year old lady who called to change her direct deposit information, to the 24 year old disabled woman (and I use the term disabled quite loosely) with four children (all of whom are "disabled"), by four different fathers, calling to find out what how much money she could make before we reduced her benefits.

It's a crazy world.

This came across my radar screen recently: elementary-school aged children literally singing a song of praise to Barack Obama. Here's a video if you don't believe me:

Fast forward to 0:42 to see the start.

That got me to thinking... I swore an oath to the Constitution.

" I, (state your name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.''

That oath is still in effect. I swore it when I joined the Army. I swore it again when I was promoted, when I joined the National Guard, when I joined DHS, and now, working for Social Security, I swore it yet again. I will be bound by that Oath until the day my Maker releases me from it.

All of our elected officials would do well to remember that the Oath is to the Constitution, not to them.

Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts.

The victims were in airplanes or in their offices -- secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers. Moms and dads. Friends and neighbors.

Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror.

The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness and a quiet, unyielding anger.

These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation.

Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.

America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.

Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature, and we responded with the best of America, with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could.

Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C., to help with local rescue efforts.

Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks.

The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed the full resources for our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.

I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance.

America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world and we stand together to win the war against terrorism.

Tonight I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. September 11th, 2001 - Part 2 of 4

We all remember where we were that day...what we were doing when the world turned upside down.

Here is my story.

I was in Bosnia, stationed at Forward Operating Base Connor. It was a very small camp, only a hundred fifty yards long by 75 yards wide, give or take. Bosnia and Kosovo were the hottest things going on at the time. We were out on the pointy end -- the only FOB in the most dangerous part of Bosnia, the Serb-controlled Republika Srpska, and three hours away from the closest friendly forces at Camp Comanche / Eagle Base. Google Maps still shows my tiny little basecamp, even though it no longer exists. I had been there for six months, since the end of March, and I was ready to go home.

For several weeks, the Serbian Army had been conducting 'exercises' in which they charged armored units right up to the border between Serbia and Bosnia. This map shows how close we were to the border - just three miles south and six miles west. It would take a minimum of three hours for the first friendly ground forces to reach us, so our mission was to hold on for three hours while the rest of SFOR (NATO Stabilization Force) came charging in. We all knew that if the Serbs rolled their armor, we would be dead or captured long before SFOR got there.

These exercises were designed to rattle our cages a bit. I was in charge of basecamp security, so my job was to prevent the cage from being rattled. One of the ways I did that was by conducting exercises that varied our security status from our normal state of 'high' to 'ridiculously high', maybe even into 'ludicrous security' or even 'plaid' (end gratuitous Spaceballs reference). At random times, I would change bits and pieces of our security status, just to try to keep my soldiers alert, and to keep whoever was watching us off guard. Sometimes I would order more dog patrols, extra security in the guard towers, or maybe close one of our two gates. It wasn't much, but it was really all we could do.

On September 9th or 10th, I don't recall now, I ordered a 72 hour 100%, full up security exercise. I didn't have a reason. It was just another of the random security exercises. It was a pain in the butt, though, because we only had 120 or so soldiers on FOB Connor. 72 hours was about as long as we could maintain 100% security before exhaustion and fatigue took their toll.

I spent a good portion of my day in the TOC, or Tactical Operations Center. If I wasn't on a patrol or traveling between Camp Comanche and FOB Connor, I could usually be found in the TOC. That was where we had all our communications gear, the computers, and all the other stuff you need to command a company scattered all over the butt end of nowhere, Bosnia. We were six hours ahead of New York, and so around quarter to three, one of my soldiers came into the TOC and told us that the first tower had been hit. No one knew what was really going on. There was speculation that it was maybe a private plane, or just an accident. No one was really talking about a terrorist attack.

Right around 3:00pm, just fifteen minutes or so later, my battalion operations officer, then Major (now Colonel) Thomas Carden, called us on the tactical radio net. I'll never forget the call:

"Animal X-Ray, Animal X-Ray, this is Devil Three. ThreatCon Delta, time now. This is not a drill. I say again, ThreatCon Delta, time now, over."

Threat Condition Delta meant an attack was imminent or underway.

I turned to my friend, Scout Platoon Leader Scott Jackels, and said, "Today's a good day to die." He gave me his trademark lopsided, sardonic grin, and said, "Yep. It's a good day to die."

My first thought was that the Serbs were making a run at the border again, and maybe weren't stopping this time. Whatever was going on in New York seemed awfully far away. I started giving orders to gather the command team, and start some of the necessary movement to block the road coming into the base camp. Within minutes the camp was locked down as tight as you could possibly imagine, even past our 100% security drill. Our 100% security drill was essentially a ThreatCon Delta drill, so for the most part we were ready, but knowing an attack was imminent or underway made us think of a couple more things we could do.

The command team got together. My company commander, then Captain Charles "Buck" Bennett, was out on patrol. I called all the patrols back in. I had forty-five minutes before Buck got back to the basecamp, and I wanted a full-up operations order ready to brief him as soon as he pulled in. A company operations order normally takes about four hours.

We got it done. Scott Jackels, First Sergeant Sibley Matchett, Sergeant First Class Davy Weaver (who died in Afghanistan in 2008...Davy, I miss you, brother), and I got it done. Buck pulled in, we briefed him on our plan, and he said, "Do it." He didn't need to make any changes.

It was about an hour and a half after the ThreatCon Delta call from Tommy Carden that I went over to the dining facility to get a cup of coffee. The news was playing on the TV in the DFAC, and that's when I really found out what was going on back in the United States.

September 11th, 2001 - Part 1 of 4

Every generation has a moment that forever crystallizes who they are and defines that generation, for good or ill. For the remainder of their lives, those that were there remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news.

There was the stock market crash of 1929 that heralded the beginning of the Great Depression. There was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 - "a day that will live in infamy." There was Kennedy's assasination in Dallas in November 1963. There was January 28, 1986, when the Space Shuttle Challenger fell from the sky.

Then there was September 11th, 2001.

America changed that day. We immediately became a nation at war. Some of us were at war a bit more immediately than others. Some of us still do not understand that we are at war.

Two thousand, nine hundred and seventy four innocent men, women, and children were lost in the attacks that day.

Let there be no doubt - you are either with us, or against us. If you support the evil that caused 9/11, my brothers and sisters in the Armed Forces, along with our brothers and sisters from our allies, will hunt you to the ends of the earth and kill you, one by one.

There will be four posts today, one at 8:46am, one at 9:03am, one at 9:37am, and one at 10:03am. This commemorates the time when each of the four airplanes hit.

Lots of News, some good, some bad

Lots of news.

First the good news. I have a job now. Starting September 14th, I'll be working for the Social Security Administration. I don't know if I'll still have a job after the Federal government's pseudo-Ponzi scheme goes bankrupt, but that's another post for another day. The really good news is that due to my previous Federal service, they started me as a GS-7 Step 10, instead of a Step 1. That's a considerable difference. On top of that, in 12 months I'll be promoted to GS-9, and to GS-11 twelve months after that. In other words, in two years, I'll be right back where I was when I left CBP in terms of pay. It's really the best situation we could possibly imagine, and we're really happy over it. God knew this job was available and that I qualified under the Veteran's Recruitment Act.

The bad news: I can't comment too much due to the soon-to-be-pending legal action, but suffice it to say that Furball's mother didn't get her on the airplane to come up here for Labor Day weekend. That sucks....however, the same God that is in control of my job hunt is in control of this situation, and EVERYTHING works together for the good of those who love Him and are called to His purposes.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, takes God by surprise.

Jimi Hendrix and Eternity

I have a not-so-secret confession: I absolutely love Jimi Hendrix' music.

This is one of the most amazing things ever recorded. His imperfections only make it more perfect, if that makes sense - Jimi Hendrix performing Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone."

The sad thing is that, in the end, Hendrix wasted his life. Yes, he left the world some absolutely amazing music. Yes, he changed the course of popular music, permanently raised the bar for electric guitar performance, and introduced a skinny kid in Colonial Heights, Virginia, to the blues, almost 15 years after his death. I literally thank God for that, but for all Hendrix' accomplishments, it wasn't enough. It's not enough to merely be a legend.

Without Christ, it's never enough.

It's not an original thought, by any means, but then again, if you're having a theologically original thought, you're probably wrong.

So I had both main interviews today. Both of them went well. Both offices want to hire me, which is a pretty cool position in which to find oneself.

The first was with the Social Security Administration. Nice folks, and the job seems like a typical boring office bureaucratic sort of position, a lot like what I did at AFLAC. I'd be a GS-11 again in two years.

The second was with the cheese factory. I'd be a supervisor in a very challenging, fast paced environment, and I'd get to wear a cool hairnet every day.

The starting pay is about the same for both jobs. In the SSA job, promotion to GS11 is guaranteed within two years, but it's fairly stagnant after that. In the cheese factory, no promotion is guaranteed, but they are looking for people who can step up to the managerial level.

So which one should I take?

Tomorrow I have a follow up interview at a cheese factory, where they want me to be a packaging supervisor, and an interview with the Social Security Administration.

Please pray that God will grant me the wisdom to know the correct choice to make for my family.

It's odd. I could work for a cheese factory less than a mile from my house. 10am to 7pm is the typical hours, for pretty good money.... or I could work for the Social Security Administration for equally good money, 20 miles from my house, with the security of working for the gov't and 13 years of government service counting for retirement. It's a weird situation because both of them are actively trying to get me to work for them, so it's a bit of a bidding war between the two. We'll see what happens.

Changing the Debate

If you haven't read Sarah Palin's statement on the ObamaCare, it's here on Facebook. Go read it now.

Even if you haven't read it, you've heard the phrase "death panels." That, to the best of my knowledge, is a Sarah Palin original. The 'death panels' she speaks of refer not to any specific bureaucracy mentioned in the thousand page monstrosity of a bill, but instead to the inevitable result of rationed health care.

Our forefathers fought and died to keep government out of their lives, to the greatest extent possible. Rationed health care -- and let's not kid ourselves, that's what this health care 'reform' is all about, allows government intrusion into the most personal and difficult parts of our lives. Who gets to decide whose life is worth living, and whose isn't? Would my little niece, born months prematurely, who has survived and thrived against all odds, have made the cut? Would my brother, who died of leukemia, have been given a vial of morphine and sent home after his diagnosis?

No thanks.

Okay, enough of a rant on that topic. I find it fascinating that Palin is changing the terms of the debate, using nothing more than her Facebook page.

The hippies used to mutter about "three chords and the truth," although, like most of what the hippie freaks claim as their own, credit belongs to someone else -- a country singer named Harlan Howard, to be exact. At any rate, three chords and the truth has mutated. Maybe in 2009 it's all about a Facebook page and the truth.

Peachtree Pastor: "We Will Care for Any Newborn"

METRO ATLANTA, Ga. -- Last weekend an Atlanta pastor made a promise that stunned his congregation and most of the people who heard it.

In a speech that discussed abortion, the President, and the sanctity of life, the most provocative statement from Pastor Vic Pentz of Peachtree Presbyterian Church came towards sermon's end:

"I make a promise to you now and I don't want you to keep this a secret," the pastor pronounced, "the Peachtree Presbyterian Church will care for any newborn baby you bring to this church.

"We will be the family to find a home for that child, and there's no limit on this. You can tell your friends, you can tell your family, you can tell the whole world ..."

Reflected Pentz a week later, "I seem to have touched a nerve by saying that to the congregation."

It's a speech he repeated this past Sunday, and it can be found on the church's web site under the sermon title, "Ethics of Life".

Pentz says the church will partner with Bethany Christian Services, which promotes itself as "the nation's largest adoption agency" and will handle the "how" of making this happen.

But Pentz didn't mention any of this in his sermon, saying he preferred it to stand out as a "stark, dramatic statement" amidst an already-controversial speech to his congregation.

11Alive's Matt Pearl spoke with Peggy Baird, the director of adoption services for the non-profit Families First service agency. Baird watched Pentz' sermon and said that, while she admired the sentiment, he didn't delve into the legal and psychological complications that go into giving up a child for adoption.

"You can't do all of that in one sermon," Baird said, "but I think if he's going to pursue this with his congregation, he's got to do ongoing education."

Pentz says he's planning to do just that, bringing in a speaker from Bethany Christian Services to talk to the congregation this August.
The sermon

Think about that one for a while. Most of the people reading this blog are pro-life, as I am. I've spent most of my adult life in the pursuit of defending the defenseless. This is taking it to a whole new level. It's not just tsk-tsking at the evil of the abortion industry -- it's saving a child's life.

How many of us are willing to take the next step and actually adopt a child into our homes that would otherwise have been murdered? I don't know that I am, at least not yet... but I should be.
That's living your faith.

The last orders we received were to go into all the world and make disciples of all men. This is doing exactly that. I'm proud as can be that it's a Presbyterian church leading the way, especially with our reputation as the 'frozen chosen.'

God's Will and My First Top Five list

First off... for those of you that are Christians, please pray for God's will regarding Furball. I won't say any more online, and you don't need to know any more than that anyway. Just pray that God's will be done.

Hmmm.... I vaguely recall some theologian, probably a dead Scottish or German guy, saying that was how we're supposed to pray - "Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven."

Oh, waitaminnit. That was Jesus, in that whole Lord's Prayer thing.

Sometimes it's best to put away the books from Calvin, Knox, Piper, and Driscoll, cool as they are, and just read the Bible.

And now for something completely different...

Top Five Things That are Cool about our house in Belmont

1) Reverse slope defense to the south. Clear 3,000+ meter fields of fire to the north. Really, really useful for when the zombies attack.

Well, here we go. I've crossed over to the dark side, Lord Vader. I've created a blog.

Most all the blogs I see are family oriented, with lots of posts about what the little ones are doing, how day-to-day life is proceeding, etc. This one will be as well, but it will be 'from my position.'

"From my position" is a military term. When the Bradley or tank commander sees a target he wants to kill, he gives a "fire command," which is very abbreviated, formal way of saying "Holy ****! THERE THEY ARE, SHOOT 'EM!!"

If the gunner can't identify the target, can't make the gun go bang, or there's just not enough time to give the full fire command (all 3 seconds of it) the commander takes over, announces "From my position!" and shoots.

That's what this blog will be.

Me, shooting from my position.

It won't be particularly politically correct, but neither shall I go out of the way to offend. If I do offend you, learn to deal with it. Because it's about life 'from my position,' there will be a healthy dose of politics, some theology, some football, and some just plain weirdness.
